Fire hotspots per year in Indonesia, 2001 to 2025, El Niño years marked

Satellite fire hotspots counted each year from NASA FIRMS, with the years NOAA's rule puts inside an El Niño event marked.

Settings

Country

Southeast Asian countries with a yearly FIRMS file.

From the year

MODIS files start in 2001, VIIRS files in 2012.

To the year

The last full year. MODIS counts after about 2022 read low.

Satellite sensor

MODIS from 2001, VIIRS from 2012. VIIRS sees more small fires, so never compare the two counts.

Next, Atlas shows the plan it made from these settings. Then you run it and get the chart, the table, About this data and the downloads.

What you get

Columns over time, with the table, About this data, a second source where Atlas has one, and PNG and SVG downloads. You can also make a short video of it.

Sources

Data from NASA FIRMS (LANCE), part of NASA ESDIS (CC0)

Notes

Hotspots are satellite detections, not fires or area burned.

Atlas marks El Niño years by NOAA's rule. It has not tested whether fire years and El Niño years move together, so the chart makes no claim about a link.
